Bloody Mary 101

Customization is nearly endless when it comes to Bloody Mary's, and with their ever growing popularity, it's become almost mandatory to learn how to make a Bloody. I've put together a few recipes ranging from incredibly easy to a bit more complex for anyone wanting to learn how to make a Bloody, or those looking for a new recipe.

The Basic

2oz Tito's

3oz Bloody Mix

1 lemon slice

1 lime slice

Splash of Worcestershire

Sriracha to taste

Shake over ice and pour back into glass

Top with black pepper and garnishes

I like using Bloody Mary Mix, especially when starting out because you save time on adding all the additional spices. A few mixes I like are Spooky's Friendly Mix, Major Peter's the works, Employee's Only.

I like to use Tito's for my vodka base because it's a great taste at a great price (usually call at most bars). A decent rail vodka would be suitable as long as it is not distinguishable.

Easy and quick garnishes are pickle spears, green olives, lemon, lime, celery stalk or small beef stick.

The Works

1 3/4oz Tito's

2 1/2oz Bloody Mix

1 lemon slice

1 lime slice

1/2 tsp Worcestershire

1/2 tsp yellow mustard (finely ground Deli-Style for extra heat, whole or cracked grain will affect the consistency)

Sriracha to taste

Shake over ice and pour back into glass

Top with dark creamy beer

Tumble to incorporate

Top with black pepper and garnishes

This is the recipe I use for a brunch menu, it's quick and easy but still has a nice hearty flavor. You can make this as light or spicy as requested. A celery salt rim is always a nice touch along with any garnishes. My beers of choice are either Lakefront's Riverwest Stein, Central Waters Mudpuppy Porter or Guinness Extra Stout

The Easy Original

Bloody Mix

1 bottle V8 Tomato Juice (46oz)

Juice of 2 lemons (4oz)

Juice of 2 limes (4oz)

3 tbsp Worcestershire

1 tbsp yellow mustard

2 tsp ground black pepper

2 tsp garlic powder

2 tsp celery salt

Keep in refrigerated in a sealed container. Serves 10-12

The Drink

2oz Tito's

3oz Original Bloody Mix

Sriracha to taste

Top with dark creamy beer

Tumble to incorporate

Garnish

I use Sriracha because I think it pairs well with tomato juice and doesn't add the extra vinegar taste that some other hot sauces do.

The Master's Original

Bloody Mix

1 bottle V8 Tomato Juice (46oz)

Juice of 2 lemons (4oz)

Juice of 2 limes (4oz)

3 tbsp Worcestershire

1 tbsp deli-style mustard

1 tbsp pickle juice

2 tsp ground black pepper

2 tsp garlic powder

2 tsp celery salt

2 tsp lemon pepper

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp cayenne

Keep in refrigerated in a sealed container. Serves 10-12

The Drink

2oz Tito's

3oz Master Bloody Mix

Sriracha to taste

Top with dark creamy beer

Tumble to incorporate

Garnish

Fun twist: Substitute pickle juice and Tito's with Chilled Dill's Pickle Vodka or home-infused pickle vodka.

Infused Pickle Vodka

2 1/2 cups vodka

1/2 cup pickle juice

1 pickle spear

Refrigerate in sealed jar for at least 3 days

I love Spicy Mary's so I like to use Famous Dave's Signature Spicy pickles (Devil's Spit if you're really adventurous).

You can turn any of these into Bloody Bulldog's just by substituting the vodka for gin. My preference is either Rehorst or Tattersall.

I hope you enjoyed these recipes! Let me know if you try any of these and how you liked them.
