We're already over halfway through the year and it's been a pretty great one for horror movies with Hereditary, A Quiet Place, The Strangers: Prey at Night and Unsane to name a few. With more trailers coming out I put together a list of the movies I'm looking forward to coming out this year.
Mandy | September 14
Somewhere in the primal wilderness near the Shadow Mountains in the year 1983, Red Miller has fallen deeply for the deceptively charming Mandy Bloom. However, the life he has made for himself comes crashing down suddenly and horrifyingly, when a vile band of ravaging cultists and supernatural creatures desecrate his idyllic home with vicious fury. A broken man, Red now lives for one thing only—to hunt down these maniacal villains and exact swift vengeance.
A heavy metal horror movie staring Nicolas Cage, directed by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) and produced by Elijah Wood. This looks beautiful, bloody, and insane! We get a peek at Nicolas Cage embracing his over the top demeanor which is being called a 'performance of a lifetime.' While Beyond the Black Rainbow wasn't the greatest movie, the art direction was stellar and I'm excited to see what this has to offer.
Cold Skin | September 7
On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a ship approaches a desolate island, far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man who is on his way to assume the post of weather observer and live in solitude at the end of the earth. He finds no trace of the man he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months, his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea.
This Spanish sci-fi horror film was released in Spain in October of 2017 and is finally making it's US debut in September. This is based on a novel of the same name but also looks heavily influenced by both Lovecraft and Del Toro respectively. Xavier Gens, the director, did the bleak and violent post-apocalyptic The Divide (which I was a huge fan of) as well as one of, if not my favorite ABC of Horrors short X is for XXL.
Summer of '84 | August 10
After suspecting that their police officer neighbor is a serial killer, a group of teenage friends spend their summer spying on him and gathering evidence, but as they get closer to discovering the truth, things get dangerous.
This horror mystery looks like Stranger Things meets I Am Not A Serial Killer and that sounds like a great combination to me. Directed by Francois Simard and Anouk Whissell (Turbo Kid), this has the makings to be a creepy and thrilling serial killer movie. This is only the groups second film and besides for Rich Sommer (GLOW) the cast are all relative newcomers but I am looking forward to their follow up film.
Dead Night | September 22
James and his wife Casey load up their two teenage kids and head out to a remote cabin in Oregon for a weekend trip. When James heads into the snowy forest in search of firewood, he encounters an enigmatic woman passed out in the snow. Bringing her back to the cabin for help, the family has no way of knowing that the woman's presence is the catalyst for a series of events that will change their lives forever.
Originally released on the film festival circuit in 2017, Dead Night was picked up Dark Sky Films and is being released later this month.
'Mixing original storytelling with timeless supernatural elements, Bradford Baruh's directorial debut features a stellar cast of genre favorites including AJ Bowen and Barbara Crampton and delivers a wild and blood-soaked weekend away.'
The House That Jack Built | November 29
The story follows Jack, a highly intelligent serial killer over the course of 12 years and depicts the murders that truly develop Jack as a serial killer.
This is a Lars Von Trier (Antichrist) film, which means nothing will be off limits. This will be bloody, brutal, disgusting. He will try to make you feel sick and want you to pull out your own eyes. And you will either love it or despise it; there will be no in between.
Halloween | October 19
Laurie Strode comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.
It's Jamie Lee Curtis as grandma Laurie Strode fighting her brother, Michael Myers, 40 years after the incidents of the first movie. What more could you want?
Honorable Mentions
The Night Eats the World | July 13
After waking up in an apartment the night after a raging party, Sam comes face to face with his new reality: an army of zombies have invaded the streets of Paris and he is one of the lone survivors. Petrified with fear, he barricades himself inside the building to survive. He wonders how long can he last in silence and solitude, and the answer comes when he learns that he's not all alone after all.
Zombie movies have become stale due to them being pushed out in droves the last few years. This movie has the chance of being the resurrection this genre needs. My main concern isn't that it's getting less than ideal reviews (because frankly I don't trust many critics when it comes to horror films), but mostly because it's currently rated PG-13/TV-14 in France. The limited release date for this film is rapidly approaching so we will find out very soon.
MARA | September 7
Criminal psychologist Kate Fuller is assigned to the murder of a man who has seemingly been strangled in his sleep by his wife and the only witness is their eight-year-old daughter, Sophie. As Kate digs into the mystery of an ancient demon which kills people in their sleep, she experiences the same petrifying symptoms as all previous victims and spirals through a chilling nightmare to save herself and Sophie before she dares fall asleep again.
A crime thriller about sleep paralysis! On paper it sounds hoaky, but the trailer has some really quality moments. The creature design is reminiscent of Lights Out and Mama but the story is original and has a high production value that gives me hope that this will be a solid movie.
